His arm throbbing, the loss of blood making Joshua lightheaded, he acquiesced to Smitty's demands. Shock having set in, he stumbled into the buggy, too groggy to even think clearly.

Sabrina?

Sabrina?

Where was Sabrina?

Securing Joshua with a rope to the inside of the buggy, then tying his wrists and legs together, Smitty went back inside the cabin. His heart skipped a beat when he found it empty.

He rushed outside and looked around him. Seeing no signs of Sabrina, he realized that he had let her slip through his fingers.

She had escaped!

The night was too dark, the marshes too threatening to those who were not familiar with them, and already having Joshua complicating things, Smitty sighed heavily and gave up on Sabrina. He could hunt for her the entire night and would probably only find himself lost in the marshes. She wasn't worth it.

Going back to his buggy, he glared down at Joshua. He would drop him off at the jail and say that he was an escaped slave. He would tell the sheriff that he had found him hiding in his blacksmith shop. Smitty would say that he had received the wounds on his face and back as he was capturing the slave. No one would believe the ramblings of a wounded slave if Joshua regained consciousness and tried to explain what had truly happened.

Downcast, Smitty drove away from the plantation. He wondered if anyone would believe Sabrina if she told what had happened here tonight. What it boiled down to was who would be believed. A black slaveor a white businessman whom so many depended on for his services?

He smiled smugly. No one would ever take the word of a slave over his! That just wasn't the nature of things.
